Tourist Tips Project

Summary: This ‘visitor manual’ initiative is aimed at informing travelers about the subtleties of the local Balinese (Hindu and Muslim) culture and traditions. By providing brief information on how local people observe their rituals and what they value and respect in their life, we can help visitors better recognize and understand some of the dominant cultural and religious attitudes and practices. With understanding comes the ability to adapt one’s behavior and attitude towards the needs and visions of the local community. This is an opportunity for tourists to learn more about the cultural richness of Indonesia, learn how to guard/protect themselves and to be more mindful when moving around, attending events, and dealing with local people in order to demonstrate respect and help preserve the Balinese culture. The outcome of this project represents a poster/brochure/ map with information and tips written in a friendly, mutually respectful tone.
Vision:
To safeguard and preserve the cultural identity, traditions, and customs of the local community by introducing travelers to the kind of behavior that can have a positive, non-destructive impact on the cultural context
To curb the uncivilized  behavior of tourists that violates local customs, destroys infrastructure and historical/religious sites
To limit the behavior of tourists that naturally prompts locals to act inappropriately
Mission:
To reduce the exposure of children to offensive, and culturally destructive behavior and practices of tourists and locals that contradict the local beliefs of decency, respect, and civility
