Pre K "Community Unit"

Start with the family as a community.

Does everyone have a home? Name and match the the animal to its proper habitat.

Does everyone have a mother? Match the baby to their mother.

Teach the song "Your Mother" by Yusuf Islam

Who should I give my love to, my respect, and my honor to?
Who should I pay good mind to after Allah and Rasulullah?
Comes your mother
Who next? Your mother Who next? Your mother. And then your father.
Cause who used to hold you and clean you and cloth you. Who used to feed you and always be with you? When you were sick stayed up all night, holding you tight. That's right My mother.

What do you like to do with your family?

Teach the song "With my Family" - appropriate for practicing "Like to", family roles as well as class members.

Tell me what you like to do,
Like to do, Like to do.
Tell me what you like to do
with your family.
(Student's name) likes to _____
(Student's name) likes to _____

Have students complete the family book. Afterwards, students share what they like to do with their mom and dad, respectively.

Discuss what students like to do with every family member and who does what at home. Who does the shopping? Who narrates them a bedtime story? Who prepares their snack?

Role Play

Have children use their chairs as trolleys and ask them to imagine they are helping the family member who usually does the grocery shopping.

After the children fill their trolleys with products and cooking utencils, they return to their seats and cook the food - use origami paper as fruits and vegetables that need to be cut.

What we do after eating? We tidy up and wash the dishes - imagine you are helping your mom or dad do the dishes and clean after cooking.

Have children communicate their thoughts through images. Learn how to arrange a sentence through visuals. Learn how to form a sentence by answering questions. Start by handing the kid a picture of a heart and ask her "Who does she like?" After she responds, ask "Why does she love her mother/ father/ teacher/ friends?" When the child has articulated a full sentence, congratulate her and ask her to decide on the next participant and hand him/her the heart. In this way, every next kid knows that the word "love" plays the most important role.

Who Does What at Home?

Ask children to draw a picture of their mother and their father on the red and blue boards respectively.

Spread out pictures with everyday routines such as cleaning, washing the dishes, shopping, cooking, etc and ask students to choose the task that corresponds to the one at home, mommy or dady, responsible for its completion.

The Class as a Community

Paper doll-chain making - encourage students to imagine they are the first paper doll of the chain; ask children to name the freinds they are holding hands with and to color their friends.

Where do you play with your friends? At the school? In the playground? Draw your school or complex.

When asked to choose one member of their family or school community, one of the kids chose to be me :) (as a note, since I originally started associating myself with Maya the Bee and since I am the second teacher in the school whose name is Maya, I named myself Maya the B)
