Celebrations [Kindergarten]

The outline of the unit has been set by dividing celebrations first according to the four seasons. Now is November, the Autumn season in the North Hemisphere. The season when leaves turn red, yellow, brown and the farmers start gathering crops from the fields. We discuss holidays such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, and The Day of the Dead.

Next lesson, children are invited to find one common thing/object that persist during the season of the forementioned holidays. The purpose is to use that object (leaves, candles/wax, etc) to make a painting/collage for an Autumn celebration or special occasion they can come up with.

Autumn is the best season for fishing as the fish need a lot of food to get ready for the long winter. The Day of the Fisherman:

The Day of the Fisherman

The Day of the Running Nose

The kids came up with The Day of the Volcano, the Smile, the Sun (eat food in the shape of the sun, eat only yellow things - bananas, lemons, pineapple, take a bath in the Sun), the Summer, the Soup (carry bowls and wait for the rain), the Balloon (popping balloons competition, water balloons fight),  the Butterfly (girls dress as butterflies, boys as - caterpillars), the Apple (eat apples, apple pie), the Rain (eat rain, dance in the rain, have a puddy muddle soup), the Tree (make a tree house, climb trees, scavenger hunt for old trees), the Cloud (lie down on the grass and watch the clouds), the Snow (make ice-cream from snow, make a snowman, juggle with snow balls, have a snow fight, build an igloo), the Bear (dress like a bear, go into the forest and hide inside a cave, eat honey), the Fish (catch fish, eat fish)

During the next lesson students are invited to brainstorm questions related to the ideas of the kids: How do we celebrate the Day of...? Where do we go? What do we eat, wear, do (decorate, dance, play music, sing, make presents)? When does it happen? Why do we celebrate it? Who celebrates it?

At the end of the brainstorming, we all voted for our favorite holiday and decided to implement for real the winning celebration, namely the Day of the Balloon. With the second class, we had two winning holidays - the Day of the Baby and the Day of the Butterfly.

Next, we move on to Winter holidays,
